About the Artist
Brooke Merrill is a mixed media artist based in Boston, and a multi-genre creative. Her artwork conjures abstracts from the depths of untold grief and trauma, to the simply joys and pleasures of daily life and music. Brooke’s artwork focuses on the range and the duality of the human experience in the hope of growing through grief and building connection from the darkest of depths to the highest of joys.
As an example, her abstract works often stitch together music and the broken pieces of the self that are usually hidden away. Even her simple pieces made into stickers can bring someone a smile or help get them through their day.
Brooke spent much of her life singing, dancing, and acting from the stage. As such, music is a frequent inspiration in her artwork. As an example, in 2022, she collaborated with Analog by Choice to paint an abstract piece from the stage based off of the music performed. She then guided the audience through an interactive art experience to live music, and then compiled the art from the audience into a unified piece. She is also a frequent collaborator with her wife, Marceline Merrill, creating abstracts based off her musical programming such as “Subconscious Labyrinths,” and “Love, by memorial mold.”
In 2021, Brooke became disabled and her relationship to art changed; it wasn’t just something to be done in spare time, it was now one of the only things she could do. Through navigating this after coming from a tiny town with 3000 people as a queer woman, her art focuses on grief and growth with a common thread of fostering connection and community. The message is simple: no matter who you are or how broken you may feel, her art is a place where you can exist exactly as you are.
